Going Green with LEGO® at Science Sunday Expo 2025
MILUG was thrilled to attend the Science Sunday Expo once again. This event is put on by our friends at Nanaimo Science and is geared towards children and youth. The expo features various non-profit organizations and science-related providers and this year’s theme was Sustainability/Going Green. MILUG members were really excited about this unique theme and came up with some amazing LEGO® models!

Since most of our models were for display only, we also had play brick on hand to help all the little hands stay busy, because we all know how hard it is not to touch LEGO®! Check out the MILUG Facebook album for more photos from this event.
As soon as people entered the expo, this stunning mosaic, “Respect Mother Nature” by Sara Doyle, caught people’s attention.

A couple of members also built models larger than the typical minifigure scale that most people are used to when you think of LEGO®. The three models below are more closely scaled to miniland scale which is commonly used at Legoland theme parks around the world. Models for the Science Sunday Expo include a household gray water collection system, a heat pump, and a cargo bike, the latter two with moving parts!
As always, there was no shortage of minifigure models on display. The fan favourite was the recycle depot complete with a full interior that was easily viewed in the absence of a roof. There was so much detail packed into this model that it captured people’s attention for quite some time. Check out the MILUG Facebook album for more detailed photos of this model!
Other minifigure models included a Rivian R-1T and Charging Station, a house with solar panels with an urban front yard food garden, an Orbital Garbage Reclamation Vehicle, transit station with train (stadler FLIRT style), bike parking, & BC Transit bus, a wind turbine, and a City of Nanaimo collection truck.
